India introducing fingerprint scanners in police vehicles

Specialized police vehicles that contain mobile fingerprint scanners were launched in Panchkula, India last Tuesday. The mobile fingerprint scanners are able to register and store a maximum of 26,500 records in just a single machine.

These special police vehicles, which are part of a pilot project, are called “Pehchan Kaun” and were first deployed in Panipat in March.

Today, Pehchan Kauns have already been deployed in the districts of Sonipat, Jhajhar, Rohtak, Faridabad, Kaithal Karnal, Mewat, Rewari, and also with the regional railway police.

State Criminal Record Bureau Director Layak Ram Dabbas said in an Indian Express article that the police car initiative is attributed due to the rise of crime in the country and also due to the limitation of law officers to positively identify criminals.
